G. Categories of Personal Information

The Description field in a Personal Information Bank indicates the specific personal information contained in the records which the PIB is describing. Since much of the personal information being collected is similar, Treasury Board Secretariat has developed the following Categories of Personal Information which have been included in some registered Personal Information Banks.

  • Biographical information (including work history, curriculum vitae, family information, hobbies, interests, etc.)
  • Biometric information (e.g. blood type, eye scan, DNA, finger / hand prints, etc.)
  • Citizenship status (e.g. citizen, landed immigrant, etc.)
  • Contact information (work and / or home information includes postal and e-mail addresses, telephone, fax, cell phone numbers, etc.)
  • Credit information (e.g. credit reports / scores, mortgages, liens, credit card information, bankruptcies, loans, third-party collections, etc.)
  • Date of birth
  • Date of death
  • Educational information (e.g. school history, post-secondary institution attended, transcripts, references, etc.)
  • Employee Identification Number (e.g. Personal Record Identifier, Military Record Number, etc.)
  • Employment equity information (e.g. gender, designated group, visible minority, etc.)
  • Employee personnel information (e.g. records of attendance and leave, notices of disciplinary action, alternative work arrangements, decisions concerning compensation and fitness for work, official languages qualifications, salary, deductions, bank account number for direct deposit, level of security clearance, performance reviews and appraisals, rating board assessments, including evaluation notes from staffing boards, training and development course applications and evaluations, etc.)
  • Financial information (e.g. income, investments, debts, garnishes, etc.)
  • Financial institution information (e.g. name, address, telephone number, and branch number of institution, account number(s), name(s) on the account, etc.)
  • Language (e.g. spoken, written, mother tongue, etc.)
  • Medical information (including psychological assessments, blood type, medications, conditions, etc.)
  • Name
  • Other identification numbers (e.g. fishing license, driver's license, etc.)
  • Physical attributes (e.g. gender, height, weight, colour of hair and eyes, complexion, physical markings (scars, tattoos, body piercing), disabilities etc.)
  • Place of birth
