Canadian Artists and Producers Professional Relations Tribunal

Responsibilities

The Status of the Artist Act sets out four related principal responsibilities for the Tribunal. When an artists' association applies to the Tribunal to represent artists for the purpose of collective bargaining under the Act, the Tribunal, using criteria set out in the Act and on the basis of evidence before it, defines the sector or sectors of cultural activity suitable for collective bargaining. It then determines, again using criteria set out in the Act, whether the artists' association applying is the most representative of artists working in that sector. If it is satisfied that the association applying is the most representative, it will certify the association as the exclusive bargaining agent for artists working in the sector. It also deals with complaints of unfair labour practices and other matters brought forward by artists, artists' associations and producers, and prescribe appropriate remedies for contraventions of the Act.
