Since the 1993 Report of the Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies, there have been calls for Canada to establish a regulatory body to oversee the area of assisted human reproduction (AHR) and related research. It was envisioned that this regulatory body would protect and promote the health and safety of Canadians who are using AHR technologies.
Assisted Human Reproduction Canada (AHRC) was formally established by an Order in Council on January 12, 2006. AHRC is mandated to administer the Assisted Human Reproduction Act (an Act respecting assisted human reproduction and related research, S.C. 2004, c. 2) on behalf of the Minister of Health. Its mission is to protect and promote the health, safety, dignity and rights of donors, patients and offspring born of AHR technologies, and to foster the application of ethical principles in relation to assisted human reproduction. It will do this by becoming a centre of expertise in administering a comprehensive legislative and regulatory framework that regulates acceptable controlled activities in Canada.
